OMG

why didn't i notice that "the walking dead" premiered on october 16 instead of 31?! AT LEAST I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING TODAY.

Oct 27, 2011

it's thursday

7:00 my alarm goes off, i hit snooze twice, then reset it for 7:30
7:30 get out of bed, go to shower
8:09 done with shower, sit down to breakfast, eat two pieces of toast
8:30 brush teeth, leave apartment
8:39 i see the 3 tram, run across 2 streets, both with red crossings (in germany there is no ''don't walk'' sign, even though i would like to see one)
8:45 arrive at pirnaischer platz to teach my first class
9:05 my student arrives
10:30 my class is finished, i quickly write down what we did in our session and leave
10:50something: catch the 3 to the university
10:59 get to my german class's building
11:03 run around with another guy from my german class--we're both lost. we run back to the ground floor and he points out our teacher, so we follow her.
12:40 german class is over. off to my next--20th century american short stories
1:08p i'm late for class, so i run in like a hurricane and sit at the only seat left
2:30 class is over, i hang back and bs with the professor about my complicated schedule
2:40 i've reserved a computer room for my classes, so i go to the media center desk and ask for the key
2:50 class starts--the most low-maintenance day for this class--cv writing. i start to prepare for tomorrow's lessons: a couple who work from a grammar book, and a girl who's preparing for her TOEFL test. sometimes people have questions about cv writing, but it's mostly a sea of pounding on logitech keyboards.
4:20 class is over, some students have finished, some have not. i wonder how i'm going to teach two of these classes in a row when i actually have to teach something. am not completely sure if i'm done preparing but i put the books away because i feel pretty dead and have been staring at an illustration that depicts that ''Marvin has washed his car!'' for the past 3 minutes.
4::40 the next class comes in. i write next week's schedule in my planner. i need an eraser.
5:48 bastian texts me to see when my class ends. i realize he still doesn't know my schedule and neither do i.

at 6:10 my class will be over and i'll probably walk to reichenbachstr. to get the tram. it'll talk me around 30 minutes to make it back to my apartment. i'll walk in the door and the cat will be waiting to be fed. bastian and i will eat dinner at like 7 and maybe watch ''frasier'' because i'm too tired to do much else. i'll remember how i have to teach at 9:20 and walk around, gathering scripts and making sure i have everything i need for a another 10 hour day. bastian will complain i work too much before turning to work on matlab. we probably need a vacation. we just took one in august. i saw one of my friends and he asked how many classes i'm teaching and taking and he said, ''that's all? that's a pretty easy semester.'' so i wonder if i'm just being lazy. i don't know many students personally and can't really compare. it's three weeks into the semester and i wonder if i can join anymore classes. i make a note in my planner to check.

update via photos

even though my life is crazy and little things pop up to undo the afore-thought well-planned chaos i've established, i still take time (sometimes) to take pictures (with my blackberry, so not the best quality.) sadly, these were taken before the semester started, when we had more time... and stuff like that...

i love the random stencil-graffiti that pops up in neustadt.

polly, spying on whatever we're eating for dinner.

yikes.

this is a tag that was on bastian's blazer. i strung it around her neck while she was eating. then she went berserk over it.

captain morgan?

bike ride through radebeul to the vineyards

enjoying some wine

i squealed when i saw this. yay marvin auf deutsch!

blueberry pancakes!

don't have a picture of the finished product (was in a mad hurry to enjoy them, you understand) recipe is here.

she wins forgiveness for her sins (eating plants) by being cute.

HUGE package we got from bastian's parents! yes yes yes!

a supermarket in california

i'm in 50s and 60s american lit.

we read four poems by allen ginsberg.

i read "a supermarket in california" and the first time i read that poem was in 2007 or maybe 2008, when justin and i were in our whitman/dickinson senior seminar. when i read it then i liked it and that was all i thought of it. "i like this full stop," repeating "full stop" in my head.

my professor gave a good lecture about allen ginsberg but the analyses were far from opinions or "initial responses" that were mentioned. i only ever think, "i like this poem," or "i don't like this poem," or "this poem reminds me of that other poem."

i liked thinking about allen ginsberg, portrayed by not james franco but maybe some other boy who looks like he could be on lookbook.nu. and then there's whitman, and he's gandalf wearing a pair of trousers perhaps, and the james franco look-alike touches gandalf's beard and they discuss the ripeness of an avocado. you can put it next to an apple and then it would ripen faster, the james franco look-alike says. he's not comfortable saying "we could put it next to an apple" yet. a little girl sucks her finger, staring. they stride on confidently, next stop frozen foods.

BROS BROS BROS

one of my students told me how a hollister store (?!!) was opened in the dresden altmarkt-galerie and all i could think of was this:

Oct 8, 2011

life. don't talk to me about life.

on our street
the semester begins on monday, ooh. well it's not really an "ooh;" it's more of an "oh." i told dan how i spent an inordinate amount of time dividing a piece of paper into little blocks so i could write my schedule, which consists of something like 5 MA classes, 5 classes to teach at the uni, about 5 private students throughout the week and a partridge in a pear tree and he was like, "eeeee."

also, thanksgiving. i always forget about how, hello, october and november are my favorite freaking months because of all the amazingness going on.

reunification day

so today is reunification day and we have a day off for the occasion. i asked Bastian, like every year, what people do to celebrate reunification day (there is a handful of days off in germany that i can't get used to) and Bastian said the same thing he says every year on days like this: "nothing."

so you know where your significant other, your better half, really, sneaks in the possibility of a day outside? and your book-and-internet-loving self says something like, "...when? um, ok..." and then you're riding your bike up hills in radebeul?

so we did that today with a friend, maybe i will post pictures later, but then we get home and Bastian's all, "hooray for physical activities!"

also, i'm afraid i will never finish the movie norwegian wood, based off murakami's novel.
